The first step is to visit an MTP Physiotherapist to evaluate your function and make sure it can support your weight before your brace comes off.
They will also be able to assist with helping you to settle your knee down so that it can be used for day to day activities without pain. This involves a combination of manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen, diclofenac or meloxicam for 1 to 2 weeks, which reduces swelling and pain – please check with your doctor or specialist that these medicines are safe for you first. Some compression bandaging can be useful, as can ice packs.
The next step in the process is a thorough functional assessment by an MTP Exercise Physiologist using state of the art evaluation technology to test the strength, range and control of your legs, hips and core. In collaboration with your Physiotherapist they will then tailor an exercise rehabilitation program to your ensure you progress and achieve an optimal outcome. The specialty MTP Knee Program is designed to achieve lasting outcomes so each program requires 3 months or 12 weeks, this is required in many cases to ensure the adaptations required for change to last.
If you are seeing an MTP Orthopaedic knee specialist, they will check the alignment of your legs to see what risk factors you may have. We can then advise you on the risks of this happening again with or without surgery.
There are a number of different options for surgical treatment of patella instability ranging from arthroscopic cartilage repair, ligament reconstruction and altering the alignment of the leg bones(osteotomy).
