Dr Brette Blakely
Special Projects CoordinatorDr Brette Blakely is a health systems researcher with more than a decade of experience improving the safety, quality and resilience of healthcare. Her work sits at the intersection of ethics, patient safety, health policy and systems improvement — helping healthcare organisations navigate complex challenges while keeping patients firmly at the centre of care.
Improving healthcare systems with patients at the centre
At MTP Health, Brette works across the organisation on projects that support continuous improvement. Collaborating with clinicians, administrators and leadership, she helps strengthen systems, improve patient and staff experiences, and keep the organisation evolving through evidence-informed innovation.
Her work spans clinical governance, service design, quality improvement, digital health and strategic projects — all in service of MTP Health’s commitment to exceptional care.
Evidence-informed, collaborative and systems-focused
Patient-centred systems
As she puts it, delivering this level of collaborative care in a small, multidisciplinary organisation only works when the patient is genuinely the centre of everything.
Evidence-informed decisions
She’s passionate about helping clinicians, leaders and organisations make thoughtful, evidence-informed decisions in an increasingly complex environment.
Resilient healthcare
Her particular interests lie in resilient systems and bioethics — and in the bigger picture of how healthcare decisions affect patients, organisations and communities over time.
Working across disciplines
What she enjoys most is working with others to solve problems, and drawing on the remarkable range of talent across MTP’s multidisciplinary team.
More than 20 years across science and ethics
Brette has spent more than 20 years in science, teaching bioethics to health professionals and ethics to Master of Business students at the University of Sydney.
Supporting organisations through complex decisions
She’s passionate about helping clinicians, leaders and organisations make thoughtful, evidence-informed decisions in an increasingly complex environment.
Supporting safe and responsible innovation
Digital safety, governance and responsible AI
More recently, she’s worked with government and industry partners on best-practice approaches to digital safety, governance and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, with a focus on ensuring emerging technologies improve patient care while supporting safe, ethical and resilient systems.
Looking at healthcare as a whole
Her particular interests lie in resilient systems and bioethics — and in the bigger picture.
Thinking beyond quick fixes
Spend enough time looking at healthcare as a whole, she notes, and you see how often people under-invest in long-term, preventative health in favour of quick fixes that leave them back where they started.

Beyond health systems and research
Outside of work, Brette is an artist with a strong interest in preventative health and living well, and stays active through strength training and running. She’s passionate about sustainability, believing healthier communities go hand in hand with caring for the world around us. A couple of things that might surprise you: she sews — seriously, not just crafty; she made her own wedding dress — and she speaks French, as one MTP client has happily discovered over a few good chats.
