Exercise Physiology for Chronic Conditions
Living with a long-term health condition can make exercise feel confusing or even a little risky. Exercise physiology for chronic conditions gives you a clear, safe starting point, with a program built around your health history, your medications and the things you want to keep doing.
Our accredited exercise physiologists at MTP Health's St Leonards and Beacon Hill clinics use exercise as part of treatment for diabetes, heart conditions, osteoporosis and arthritis. We work alongside your GP and specialists, so your program fits with the rest of your care.
Health Conditions We Support
We use exercise as part of treatment for these conditions, so choose the one that fits you:
How We Work
Your first 50-minute consultation covers your medical history, current medications and a functional assessment of strength, fitness and movement. From there, we design a program that starts where you are and progresses at a pace your body tolerates.
- Clear communication with your GP, specialist or physiotherapist
- Regular reviews so your program changes as your health does
- Planning for people managing more than one condition at a time
- Options for 1:1 sessions, small groups or telehealth
Exercise as Part of Your Care
Our exercise physiologists see people with chronic conditions at St Leonards on the North Shore and Beacon Hill on the Northern Beaches, with online sessions also available. No referral is needed.
Book an initial assessment and we will help you find the right place to start.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do I need a referral to see an exercise physiologist for a chronic condition?
No, you can book directly without a referral. If you would like to explore Medicare support, ask your GP whether a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan suits your situation.
Is exercise safe if I have a heart condition or diabetes?
For many people, exercise can be done safely when it is planned and monitored. We screen for risks at your assessment and may ask for clearance from your doctor before progressing.
What if I have more than one health condition?
That is common, and exercise physiologists are trained to plan around several conditions at once. We prioritise what matters most for your health and adjust the program as things change.
Can Medicare help cover exercise physiology?
You may be eligible for some Medicare support through a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, and people with type 2 diabetes may also be eligible for group allied health services. Your GP can confirm eligibility, and our team can talk you through options.
