Sam Michie
PhysiotherapistSam is a physiotherapist working across MTP Health’s St Leonards and Beacon Hill clinics. With three years in the profession and a background steeped in sport, he helps people recover from injury, return to what they love, and learn how to manage things themselves going forward.
From sporting injuries to physiotherapy
His own experience with sporting injuries is what drew him to physiotherapy. Being on the other side of the rehab process gave him a genuine appreciation for the role of good treatment and education — and a desire to help others get back to full capacity.
Since qualifying, he’s worked in private practice with a broad mix of patients, from younger athletes in Crossfit and rugby (at club and representative levels) through to postoperative patients and GP referrals.
Rehabilitation for recovery and return to sport
An individualised, holistic approach
Sam especially enjoys working with patients returning to running and sport, and has a particular interest in postoperative and trauma cases, including postoperative shoulders. His toolkit includes dry needling, manual therapy and exercise-based rehabilitation, all delivered with an individualised, holistic approach.
A clear starting point for your recovery
Starting with a plan
At your first appointment, Sam will give you a clear starting point and an initial plan to begin your recovery and work towards your goals.
Clear expectations
He’s a big believer in setting expectations early, keeping communication open, and involving you in the process — starting with clear direction and a self-guided rehab program, then handing over more autonomy as you progress.
Education
Education is central to how he works: understanding your injury, what’s contributing to it and the plan ahead helps you feel comfortable, informed and confident throughout.
Building autonomy
He’s a big believer in setting expectations early, keeping communication open, and involving you in the process — starting with clear direction and a self-guided rehab program, then handing over more autonomy as you progress.
From acute injuries to performance
He’s a good fit for anyone in pain after an acute injury, dealing with niggles that just won’t settle, or looking to improve their performance.
Scale rehab to your symptoms
His practical advice? Scale your rehab based on how your symptoms feel each session. And if you’re nervous about booking that first appointment, his answer is simple: come in and see the team at MTP.

Beyond the clinic
Outside the clinic, Sam keeps active with the gym and plenty of sport — Oztag, touch, rugby and running among them. Originally from New Zealand, he studied at the University of Auckland and still backs the NZ Warriors and Counties Manukau rugby. One thing patients are often surprised to learn: tennis was his primary sport right up until the age of 18.
